The Impact of the Lack of Access to Home Health Nursing on Families of Children with Medical Complexity in the United States

For families of children with medical complexity (CMC), lack of nursing support in the home can result in significant social and financial hardships beyond its effects on clinical outcomes. This study aimed to quantify the impact of limited availability of private duty nursing. Families of CMC reported that inadequate access to in-home nursing creates significant downstream effects including delays in hospital discharge, major career changes among parents, especially on mothers, and significant annual income loss. Strategies that connect families of medically complex children with skilled nurses in their communities are urgently needed to improve the health of CMC and lessen these burdens on families...

The State of Home Health - The Impact The Nursing Shortage Has On Medically Complex Families

Did you know that 37.9% of children with medical complexity (CMC) experience extended hospital stays due to a lack of in-home nursing care? That was almost the case for Olivia Knight, who was born at just 27 weeks. After spending seven months at OHSU and another two at @childrenscolo, her parents, Gary and Kathryn, were eager to bring her home. But Olivia’s ongoing medical needs — including a tracheostomy and 24/7 care — presented a new challenge: finding consistent, reliable in-home nursing. ❤️ 🏡

Enter Dr. Brian Jordan. The Knight family first met Dr. Jordan during Olivia’s time in our NICU. His commitment didn’t stop there — he coordinated with the Colorado team to ensure a smooth transition during their move and continues to support the family as a board member of Hello Nurze.

Most recently, through this collaboration, the Knights and Dr. Jordan published research highlighting the challenges families of CMC face. One striking finding: while 86.8% of families surveyed had in-home nursing care approved by insurance, but 47.5% received less than half of those approved hours.
